Looking for Happiness

"Happiness is not in our circumstances, but in ourselves.

"It is not something we see, like a rainbow, or feel, like the heat of a fire.

"Happiness is something we are."

(1928-1992) Roman Catholic Priest, editor, columnist

Standing at the edge of a river, it's very normal to ask if there is happiness on the other side.

Just as a grazing sheep wonders if the grass is greener on the other side, we view the lives of those around us as being better than our circumstances.

"They look so happy, so comfortable, look at how they live - I would love that life," we think.

Not so fast, cowboy.

Wait until you walk a mile in their moccasins.

The face we might wear in public, to quote Eleanor Rigby (kids, Google it), we keep in a jar by the door.

It's a good reason to greet others with a cheerful smile, sincere concern, empathetic ear, and quiet heart.

The more we do - the happier (make that content) we'll likely be.

Then the folks on the other side, will want to come over and stand by you.
