Gate Closed

"...open wide that Golden gate
California, Here I come."

It was an improvement on last January's playoff loss, but a loss is a loss is a loss.

The woulda, coulda, shoulda refrain will go on for a few days:  the misinterpretation of penalty calls at the end of the first half; one fewer penalty called here or there; and how about taking a knee instead of running out of the end zone late in the game.

There's no point in that.  The 49ers won, the Packers lost.

So, with six more days until we tee it up against Washington - there needs to be some searching for the silver linings in a gut-crunching defeat.

1.  It looks like Green Bay has a running back.  Mr. Lacy didn't get lots of yards, but the way he cracked through the line and leapt over the goal line looks like a sign of things to come.
2.  The defense played a solid game against one of the new generation of quarterbacks who is feared as much for his legs as his arm.  That's something to build on and the "lets meet at the ball carrier" mentality is a good one for the guys on D.
3.  It's the first step in a 16 step program and Coach McCarthy has proven through the years he knows how to marshal the troops and get them ready for step two.

The game was exciting and got my blood pumping.  I was off the couch with a shout several times - on Matthews' sacks, Nelson's dancing reception down the sideline, and Lacy's dive into the end zone.  It was great.

Games like this remind me of something Jerry Kramer wrote in Instant Replay:  "We never lost, time just ran out on us."

That may be the best explanation of all this week - we were just 40 yards and a few more seconds shy of a win.

It's OK, team - let's have a good week of practice - and go get 'em next time!

Go Pack, Go!
