Farm to Market

There are farmer's markets to be found nearly every day of the week around Madison and some days there are more than one vying for attention and green for their greens.

While the Market on the Square downtown gets the most attention and has a large number of vendors, the smaller ones offer attractive looking food and there is a quieter ambiance which allows more time for conversation between shopper and farmer.

These farm markets are also offering other craft type foods - this past Saturday morning at the Hilldale Farmer's Market I talked to a young man from Verona developing Bar-B-Que sauce which he is selling.  I tasted some of his sweet BBQ sauce and it was very good with the right amount of twang and flavor.

There was music in the air, from this duo on the Banjo and Bass.  Next to them was a box of small instruments and a sign asking passers-by to pick one up and jam.  (So, it is a kind of food stand).

The selection of fresh-picked fruits, vegetables, and craft foods create a marketplace of fun and wonder.  The bright colors are a feast for the eyes, and like many of the big box grocery stores - you can even sample the merchandise.

If you haven't been to a Farmer's Market near you yet... get there soon... it's harvest time!
