It's the first time I've been very far into the majestic scenery that makes up the Door County Peninsula that juts into Lake Michigan and the Green Bay (yes, that's what the town is named for), and all I can wonder is what took me so long?
The photo above is of the waters of Green Bay shot at a county park just north of Ellison Bay which is about as far north as you can go before you need to take a ferry ride to get further up 'the thumb.' (If you don't "get" the thumb reference please look at a map.)
The place where I stood for that shot was on a rock on a bluff facing north - another step would have been a real bad idea. The aroma of the woods and water intertwined with the view was intoxicating.
The next morning, in a wonderful small hotel in Bailey's Harbor called the Square Rigger, the sun woke me up. Literally, this is the view from the room in the spot where I was sleeping when the sun broke over the horizon of Lake Michigan.
One thing for sure, a view like this to wake up to every day is a sure cure for the urge to spend a morning in bed!
The air seemed cleaner. The sky bluer. It may have helped that temps during our time up north were more comfortable than the typical summer heatwave... but as they like to say in these parts, it is - "cooler by the lake."
The best advice, however, is to find a park bench like the one I sat on in a Sturgeon Bay park overlooking the Bay (which became a canal cutting across the land finished in 1881) toward the south.
As the sun sparkles across the water near day's end - it seemed to delight in the fact that less than 12 hours later it would be dancing on the water just a short drive to the east.
If you haven't been there yet, go. If you haven't been in a while, go back. If you live there or visit regularly - be sure to give praise to our Father in heaven for this beautiful creation.
