A Little Lunch

After last weekend's trip around the Badger Army Ammunition Plant grounds, it was time for lunch.

Just down the road was one of the places cited in the Cafe Wisconsin: A Guide to Wisconsin's Down Home Cafes, Leystra's Venture Restaurant in Sauk City.
The place had caught my attention before, but the beautiful building made it look to my eyes as a bit more than your average downtown diner.

Well, I was right and wrong.

It is more than your average diner, but the prices are fair and the food is very good!

The comfortable dining room is just behind the windows at the front of the building that started more than a century ago as a wagon shop.  Then it became a milk plant before transforming into an ice cream and cheese shop before opening as a restaurant in the 1970s before the Leystra's took over in 1981.  The walls today recall the city's history with dozens of historic pictures.

The friendly waitress welcomed us in - recommended the specials and made us feel at home.

I ordered the Tuna - homemade with celery and onions - and a large glass of chocolate milk.

It was great.  It is also worth saying that sometimes we try out restaurants looking for the spectacular and amazing, however, there is something comforting and deeply satisfying about a Tuna Croissant Sandwich on a summer day.

Here's to the Leystra's Restaurants among us - that take us in, welcome us warmly, and provide great food at affordable prices.

To me, that's the essence of a great home-town cafe and Leystra's Venture certainly deserves to be on that list and mentioned in the Cafe Wisconsin book.

I'm looking forward to a breakfast visit sometime real soon!
