Racing Sausages

20 years ago today the Sausages came to life at Milwaukee County Stadium.  Previously, animated sausages raced on the video board.

At first, there were only three:  Bratwurst, Polish, and Italian.

They didn't work all the time, either, coming out just for 'big' games and otherwise continuing to race on the big screen.

May 29, 1994 the sausages ran on the day Robin Yount's number was retired and they have been on the starting line every home game since.

The Hot Dog became #4 in the late 1990s and in 2007 the Chorizo became #5.

Years ago, a good friend of mine had the opportunity to run the race while working in radio.  He described it as smelly with no vision and a whole lotta fun.

There have been years when the best thing about a Brewer game was the Sausage race.

Even this past Sunday when a Bobblehead honoring the Polish was distributed to all the fans... many headed for the exits after the race in the middle of the sixth inning.

Before the game the sausages are Goodwill Ambassadors for the team and the stadium and provide a nice bit of PR for the Klement's Sausage people which claim the group in 1994 as a bunch of real wieners.  (Really, did you think I wouldn't use that pun sometime?)

It's a great idea and it caught on - 15 major league teams are offering some kind of mascot race showdown of their own.

No betting please, the sausages race for entertainment purposes only.
