Flag Day

Fly the flag today - it's Flag Day.

Today commemorates the adoption of our Nation's flag in 1777 when the Second Continental Congress made the resolution.  Then they went and had a tea party.  Or, so I thought I heard.

It's also the anniversary of the United States Army which is older than our country, since it was formed in 1775.

The most common way to observe today, of course, is by flying the flag.

You might add to it by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance or  singing the National Anthem.  (I bet you can get your co-workers to join you.)

The flag gets used in many ways - some inappropriately as it is wrapped around commercial advertisements for all items under the sun, or when wrapped around the shoulders of a politician trying to impress us with their patriotic bona fides.

The flag represents each of us and the hope and promise that is America - one Nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.  That is a lot of stuff packed into a couple yards of fabric, but hope and promise worth working to achieve.

In our efforts to achieve those goals, we just might come closer, and that would be a very good thing!
