The First Day

Yesterday was the first day of spring in Madison, Wisconsin.

Of course, the calendar thought it was nearly three weeks ago, but Monday - with sunshine and warm rays of the sun; a spring rain; dwindling piles of snow; fast fleeting flecks of ice on area lakes and ponds; and full voice mating calls from birds of every kind echoing over the tops of the trees made it the first official day of spring.

Then again, this being Wisconsin - today is much cooler, windier, and rainier - but yes, indeed, spring has sprung!

The same spot on Mud Lake where five days ago anglers nervously shifted from foot to foot to keep less of their weight on the ice now dropped a line over the side of a boat.

The dirty white mounds of snow of that covered outdated Christmas trees (and sometimes autumn leaves) are gone - leaving behind smaller piles of road dirt and grime that re-purposes itself as fertilizer and grist for small animals.

The brownish, multiple froze tops of daffodils and tulips now stand four and six inches tall ready to burst into bloom.

The scarves and gloves have given way to windbreakers and ball caps.

The ice scraper and extra anti-freeze are booted to the trunk to be replaced by windshield solution to wash away the winter's dirt.

Winter is gone - spring is here.
