Here Comes the Sun..

It's March - spring is 19 days away; April is a mere 30 days off; the sun is walking even further north each day and getting higher in our sky.

In these parts, March came in like a lamb.  According to folk lore, that means it will go out like a lion.

I was curious about the creation about the phrase that has come to identify with March, and it goes way back to a culture that thought spirits controlled the weather.  Balance was thought to be necessary throughout the year, hence, if a month started in a wild and woolly fashion it would end with calm.  If the month starts in relative peace, it is likely to walk off the stage in a fury.

The phrase also benefits from our general selective memory.

You know, how 'every time' you get to a certain intersection the light is red.  Or each time there is a State Tournament there has to be a spring snowstorm.  It's the kind of thing that happens frequently enough to imprint in our head as something that happens each and every time.

So, there is no guarantee where you live how this month will go - the month includes the celebration of Easter the last Sunday of the month - and the best Easter Sundays are those with warm sunshine and daffodils peaking out of the soil with a sunny smile for passerby.  It also includes St Patrick's Day, one reason I heard for the party of St. Patty's Day is that it offered Irish Catholics a one day vacation in the midst of Lenten deprivation.  That may or may not be true, but like the lion and lamb of March... it makes for a good story.

Yesterday we acknowledged Caesar for the month of February as we know it... little did he know that the short month meant the Ides of March were upon him sooner and unexpectedly.

Enjoy March and Happy Birthday, Andy!
