That's not what it was called the I. time it was played, however, then it was the First World Championship Game NFL v AFL.
Kansas City Chiefs owner, Lamar Hunt, who owned the AFL entry came up with a catchier title that caught in his head after watching his kids having fun with their super ball.
Did you have a super ball? I did, in fact, I think everyone I knew had at least one. Small and made out of rubber, you could bounce if off the ground to great heights. If you used it instead of a baseball out on the playground, well, good luck catching up to it.
Apparently, Lamar wasn't sure it was such a good name and said as much. But the name stuck and XLVI games later it is it's own semi-official national holiday.
Grab some chips, something to drink, gather around the TV today (pregame/game/post-game) with your friends and/or family and pick a team to cheer. Oh, and you better pay attention to those little things they show between moments of game action, since the commercials may be what creates the most buzz around the proverbial water cooler at work tomorrow.
You might want to record it - the next 'real' NFL game won't come again until the first Thursday in September.
