It Starts with a Bike

One of the Green Bay Packers best traditions (out of many) is the training camp ritual where kids from town (and some who drive to Green Bay for the opportunity) bring their bikes to a special corral, and wait.

Some, like this girl, get a Packer starter, #38 Tramon Williams, to ride their bike while they run alongside carrying the helmet with the beautiful mustard yellow and adorned with the powerful 'G' on each side.  When the get to the practice field, the young escorts wait for practice to finish and complete the circuit.

It's one of the things that make the Packers' America's team.

That 363,948 stockholders own more than five million shares of Packer stock is another.  Those shares can only be sold back to the team; no one can accumulate enough shares to call the shots.

Those fortunate enough to be shareholders, like me, get invited to the annual shareholder meeting and a special shareholder section in the Packer Pro Shop catalog.  That's it - no ticket privileges or even a bump up the waiting list.

As the only publicly owned franchise started as a non-profit in 1922, the Packers don't have an out-spoken owner.  Instead, there are 363,000 passionate and slightly crazed green and gold faithful.

There are Packer owners around the world - who can call the Packers their 'own' and dedicate time to watching their investment on television or, for those fortunate to have season tickets, in the seats at Lambeau Field.

Tonight is step two on the road to the Super Bowl as we play the 49ers - if things break the proper way and Seattle also wins - we could play them in Lambeau a week from Sunday for the NFC Championship and a Super Bowl berth February 3.  Otherwise, we head to Atlanta next Sunday for the NFC crown.

One thing at a time.  Next up is the game tonight at 7:00 CST - let's go get 'em, guys.

If you don't own a piece of the Pack yet, you are welcome to join this international family of Packer faithful as a fan.  Raise your voice and cheer them on.

Just like the summer scene of large men riding kids' bikes to practice offers a reminder of the proper place this team has in our life.  The great coach offers advice as well:

"Think of only three things: your God, your family and the Green Bay Packers-in that order."  Vincent T. Lombardi
