Bridges of Indiana's Counties - Parke Co. - # 64 Marshall (29/31)

We didn't know April 17, 2010 was the perfect day to visit the Marshall Covered Bridge, but it was.

Fresh grass and new flowers framed the bridge perfectly against a blue spring sky.

This was the penultimate bridge for J.A. Britton, who was 80 the year it was finished.  He is credited with building 40 across 3 Indiana counties.

It is the second youngest of the old bridges in Parke County.  In two weeks I'll feature the structure in Bridgeton, but it is a 2006 rebuild of an 1885 bridge destroyed by fire the year before.  I don't count that one.

The Bridge blends into the valley.

The Marshall Bridge is a few miles west of the beautiful white Jackson Bridge.

While the Jackson Bridge was named in honor of President Jackson; there is some confusion on who the Marshall Bridge honors.  Local historians believe it is named for David W. Marshall, the owner of the nearby Hill Crest Valley Farm.

What I like most about the Marshall Bridge is the view into the valley where the bridge hides in plain sight.

Whatever the season, it is a beautiful bridge.
