Bridges of Indiana's Counties - Parke Co - #54 Harry Evans (19/31)

Harry Evans Covered Bridge over Rock Run Creek

In the rural countryside of Parke County one of the 31 covered bridges sits near a grove of trees on a gravel road crossing a small creek.

The Harry Evans bridge wouldn't get a second look if it was a regular bridge.

Instead, the red walls and shingled roof make it a presence in this otherwise nondescript landscape..

My memory of the Harry Evans bridge is how ordinary it was.

Just a bridge, a means to cross from one side to another.  A simple solution to a problem.

The Evans Bridge is
65 feet long.  (dwm)
It is named for Harry Evans, a nearby landowner, although the Parke County Guide's version of the story indicates a neighbor thought it should have been named for someone else.  As local gossip goes, this is pretty weak.

Later generations of the Evans family lived nearby through the 1960s, but the legacy survives.

You don't expect a lot of pomp around a bridge like Harry's - it just does the job with little fanfare.

The Harry Evans Bridge has a cousin, Zacke Cox.  You will see that bridge and some pretty nice photos in two weeks.
