On the Air - A Blog Story

WRSE/WMJM is a small AM and FM radio station in rural Wisconsin - covering the news, sports, events,and activities that impact the community.

Spend some time with this close-knit community and see what it looks like through the voices of the station's staff.

The series was first published in 2015, then refreshed and re-released two chapters a day from September 13 to October 2, 2019.

Preview - Your introduction to small town radio and what will be "heard" during 35 weeks of "On the Air."

Chapter 1 - It's another day waking up the people in and around Roseville.  The local speech team is heading to state.  Some jobs may be coming to town.  And what's going on with the remote later in the day?  Start your day with newsman Pete Moss and Jeff in the Morning.

Chapter 2 -  WRSE is on remote from Gus & Tom's when a surprise idea to keep the area's older adults is unveiled.  It's Storm Awareness Week and a horrible storm is recalled that wiped out a nearby town.

Chapter 3 - The remote continues from downtown Roseville as Packer legend LeRoy Butler makes an appearance.  The community fundraising goal is reached.

Chapter 4 -  It was the first night flying solo as Emjay settled behind the board for what she expected to be an uneventful evening.  It would be one she wouldn't forget.

Chapter 5 - The storm left damage and disaster in its wake creating problems for Roseville residents and a hectic night at the station.

Chapter 6 -  Afternoon and Morning disc jockeys go fishing for a "staff meeting" while plans are underway in town for a benefit to help those recovering from the storm.

Chapter 7 - Ken Records morning show, "On the Records" gets a huge community response to help those in need after the storm   Pete plans to help with a Memorial Day ceremony.

Chapter 8 - Steve preps for his afternoon show in a special way, while the station prepares for an upcoming community event.

Chapter 9 - Pete and Kevin reminisce about the first time they met professionally.  Emjay and Jake discuss the future when a great opportunity presents itself.

Chapter 10 - WRSE/WMJM owner Jack and long-time friend Els reminisce about growing up in Roseville and the changes they've seen come to this small community that's preparing for one of the biggest weekends in its history.

Chapter 11 - It's the first day of the Roseville Ski Show Spectacular and the gang from WRSE is getting ready for the remote broadcast while the locals gear up for all the visitors.  Unfortunately, they get tested early with an accident on the water.

Chapter 12 - Saturday of the Ski Show is a hit for WRSE and the crew as crowds descend on the Rose River to watch the show.  Farmers on the west side of the river open up their shore access, the crowd doubles in size.

Chapter 13 - Sunday is the showdown for the top 3 teams:  Marquette, Michigan; Janesville's Aqua Jays; and the Rose River Skiers.  WRSE shares their feed wit stations in the other two cities as they pull out all the stops to make the last day one the town will remember.

Chapter 14  Morning talk show host Ken Records wakes up and knows something's wrong.  Enough to force him to the doctor.  At the clinic next to the Rose County Hospital, Dr. James Noel had a busy day before Ken Records wound up in sick bay.

Chapter 15  Meteorologist Kevin Storm has no idea on this forecast, but is hoping his friend Ken Record's diagnosis has some partly sunny skies.  Dr. Noel confers with an allergy expert in the capital city.

Chapter 16  The great returns from the Ski Show has the guys at the station wanting to take hyper-local radio to the next level.  Dr. Straw gets ready for his appearance on the Records.

Chapter 17  Dr. Maxwell Straw drives into town for his introduction on the air.  Meanwhile, two radio staffers are afflicted with could be a growing problem.

Chapter 18  Dr. Straw checks out the afflicted staffers; WRSE prepares for the debut of Sports Tonight.

Chapter 19  Kathy Jones and the coaches work out who is doing what and prepare for the first two games of the season Friday night from the new studio at Gus & Tom's.

Chapter 20 It's Jake and Emjay's big day and the crowd is gathering.

Chapter 21 Pete's wondering if he's stuck in a hole and needs to move before he can't get out at all.

Chapter 22  Jack and Pete have a private meeting where Jack unveils a surprise.  Jeff and Steve work on a plan to change the FM station.

Chapter 23  It's the kind of thing that doesn't happen in places like Roseville... until it does.  Pete hears an emergency call on the scanner which set the community on its ear.

Chapter 24  Some good police work and old fashioned luck help crack the case, which brings a daughter of the town back home.

Chapter 25  Jack, Glenn, and Elaine returned to Roseville the back way to avoid the crowds before planning how to rejoin the community after an unwelcome adventure.

Chapter 26  Sports Tonight with Gus & Tom's is a big hit; Pete gets invited to dinner and later considers his future in more detail.

Chapter 27   Birthday wishes and a surprise party is planned for a Rosevillian and WRSE tries out a new morning contest.

Chapter 28  It's a weekend, which means part-timer Vicki is doing her regular air shift Saturday night and owner Jack heads north to spend some time fishing in his favorite place.

Chapter 29  Jack is in his favorite place, Chetek, Wisconsin; when things take a dramatic turn for the worse - impacting lives hundreds of miles away.

Chapter 30  Pete and Jack's friend Els make a quick trip up north to take care of Jack's stuff and try to get a handle on what happens next.

Chapter 31  Pete, the station's staff, and the rest of Roseville has to adapt to a life without Jack and a new person in charge at WRSE.

Chapter 32   A promotion for Emjay and Steve along with the Sports Tonight team get ready for Roseville's next big game.

Chapter 33  This is the big game at Camp Randall this week and in addition to that on his plate Steve Jackson has some other big fish to fry.  Emjay and Brock receive a welcome surprise and the town prepares for a celebration.

Chapter 34  A Roseville Thanksgiving with much to give thanks and a new opportunity for a station veteran.

Chapter 35 The final chapter waves good bye to one member of the station family while welcoming two others into new roles and the news director is ready for something new.
