Earth Day

The beginnings of Earth Day came from the protests of the 1960s.  Its founders wanted it to be a environmental teach-in.

U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin was its founding father.

The first Earth Day was April 22, 1970.  We've come a long way.  There is a long way to go.

It was during the 70s I collected steel and aluminum cans to  recycle.

Back then, there wasn't curb-side pick up for recyclables.  We had two barrels and I would separate the steel from aluminum.

A bit of history here, if you are my age, you might remember steel soda and beer cans in addition to what were known as "tin cans" for fruits and vegetables.  Now, all beverage cans are aluminum.

As an individual, family, or even as one organization it can be difficult to see the value of taking the time to keep the recyclables out of the trash.  We might think there isn't an impact if a pop can or paper winds up in the trash.

Here is one I didn't think of for a long time... toilet paper.  Those little cardboard tubes are recyclable.  Next time you replace a roll, grab the tube and carry it to the recycling bin.

Plastic, as Mr. McGuire told Benjamin, is the future.  It overwhelms us.  In some forms it is easy to use, re-use, and recycle.  In other forms, it escapes recycling and the landfill and hurts animals and the environment.

In 2015, National Geographic reported there was more than 5.25 TRILLION pieces of plastic debris in the ocean, with 269,000 tons of it floating.  Another 4 BILLION microfibers are at the bottom of the sea.

It seems to me that caring for the earth as stewards of this creation is a job for all of us.  A job given to Adam and Eve.  The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. Genesis 2:15

While many want to debate whether climate change is real or imagined, I suggest we end the debate and care for the land that we rely on for shelter and food.  If we make wise decisions on what we want and need in terms of the price paid by the environment - I believe we all will all breathe easier.
