Burger and a Malt

I've eaten breakfast at Schubert's several times, but this was the first time we dropped in for lunch.

The 105 year old establishment on Mt. Horeb's Main Street has been serving up breakfast and lunch a long time.

Back in 1960, John F. Kennedy stopped in to visit - there are photos on the wall - but I didn't see what, if anything he had to eat.

It's a classic cafe with breakfast and lunch on the menu before they close at 2 each day (closed all Monday).

While breakfast was an option, I wanted to give their burger a shot. However, it should be noted they offer some items you might not expect in a small-town diner... like quesadillas, a Cuban sandwich, and a Pasty.

First, bring on the malt!

The chocolate malt is made the old fashioned way.  Hand-scooped ice cream, chocolate, and a generous scoop of malted plus whipped cream.

It's a creamy combination of chocolate and malt flavor in every pull on the straw.

Add a couple of eggs and you have a meal right there!  (Back in college, I had a chocolate malt with two eggs mixed in nearly every day for dinner. I'm pretty sure I had a much faster metabolism then, too.)

The hamburger was very good.  High quality beef in an individually prepared patty tucked inside an artisan roll.

The day's specials are highlighted in colorful chalk script on the big blackboard stretching the length of the counter.

There's a nice home-town, familiar feel inside Schubert's.  It's friendly, but not overwhelming.

It's just a great place to meet and eat with family and friends - for breakfast or lunch.
