Packer Memo - Game 6 - Chicago

My oldest Packers cap.
It's safe to say the game tape won't be on display in the Hall of Fame.

After the half there was another gut punch as a poor decision to return Chicago's kick left Green Bay at their 15.

Aaron Rodgers fumbled into the end zone and the Bears recover.  It didn't look good.

In fact, it looked like a flashback to the bad-old days when the sometimes hapless Packers were lucky to win 4 or 5 games in a season.

Maybe that bit of bile rising in their throats helped turn the tide as Green Bay got a burst from Ty Montgomery to start their next drive and finished it with a great Davante Adams grab for a 5 yard TD pass to retake the lead 13 - 10.

Just one play can turn the momentum.  Green Bay's defense got credit for a sack after an astute Packer challenge put the Bears in trouble with 3rd down and 29 yards to go for a first.  The Packer D completed their best series of the night to force a punt.

Was the tide turning?

8 plays and 88 yards later, Rodgers to Adams again... 20 - 10 Pack.  It was the longest drive of the season and hopefully a sign of progress on offense.

"da-da, da--da-da-da, Go Pack Go!"

3 possessions - 3 touchdowns - Rodgers to Randall Cobb.  The sound you heard last night was a giant exhale from fans happy to see their team back in action.  Crosby, who never misses an extra point, misses.

Packer play-by-play man, Wayne Larrivee declares the dagger is in; which is his way of pronouncing the game over.

Interceptions by rookie Blake Martinez and Nick Perry put the exclamation point on the 26 to 10 Packer win.

It's a little weird to be 4 - 2 and hear a chorus of Chicken Littles screaming how the sky is falling.

As a Packer fan with more than a few miles on the tires, I easily remember a time when 4 - 2 would have caused cheering in the streets; bumper stickers declaring "The Pack is Back;" and dreams of Super Bowls.

This team isn't on all cylinders after a bounce back win after the bad loss to Dallas, but it's a start.

Their resilience, especially after the Bears fumble recovery touchdown, shows character.  That helps, but the team needs more healthy bodies, especially in the secondary and at running back.  In the meantime, the offense moved the ball effectively and the defense limited the Bears to 3 points.  It's a positive and shot of confidence for a team (and fan base) that needed it.

Now, they get 10 days of rest and practice before playing in Atlanta.

Green Bay and Chicago have played 193 times.  The Bears with 94 wins, Green Bay with 93 and 6 ties.  During the game, Green Bay edged past Chicago in total points scored through all those games. They play in Chicago December 18 to even the series for the first time since the 1930s!

Go Pack, GO!
