Packer Memo - Game 5 Dallas

The key moment to me came in the third quarter - after the Cowboys extended their lead to 20 - 6, Green Bay had it inside the Dallas 5, first down and goal to go when an Aaron Rodgers QB draw ended badly as he was stripped of the ball.

Dallas recovered.

While the Packer's Morgan Burnett intercepted the first pass of Cowboy QB Dak Prescott's career giving the team a first down at the 12 yard line... it fizzled with just a field goal posted.

On the ensuing Dallas possession, they cashed it for a 27 - 6 advantage.  It was all over but the shouting.  Final score, Dallas 30 - Green Bay 16.  Packers are 3 - 2 on the year.

There will be lots of Chicken Littles in Packerland today - moaning about what happened to our nearly perfect quarterback and the shut-down defense which seemed to dominate the season's first four games.  A few will throw the towel in the ring, proclaim the season lost and call for everybody to gt fired.

Other than wide receive Ty Montgomery, who had a breakout game, there were few heroes in the Blue and Gold yesterday (if you didn't see the game, the team wore throwback jerseys paying tribute to the teams who wore them from 1937 - 48 when the Pack won two of their 13 championships).

First, let's say Dallas played a good game.  Their rookies, running back Zeke Elliott and quarterback Dak Prescott were both solid.  The Cowboy defense didn't get to the quarterback often, but had answers in coverage.

Green Bay was inches away, again.

As a fan, I've appreciated Rodger's marksmanship and ability to avoid turnovers throughout his career.  For some reason, or perhaps multiple reasons, those two qualities aren't on full display right now.

Maybe he's trying to be to precise and needs to "let it rip" in getting the ball in the hands of his receiving corps.  His offensive line is doing a good job of keeping him clean, but there is something missing.

Journeymen and armchair psychoanalysts are happy to call sports-talk radio shows with their ideas of what's gone wrong... "it happened last season at Denver,"  "he's not coached hard enough,"  "he's thinking too much,"  "it's the receivers fault."

In a what are you doing for me today kind of league, I'm confident if Coach McCarthy or anybody else on the coaching staff could solve the problem, they would.

The defense didn't look like the same unit which played well in the first four games.  They were down to their #4 corner back playing the #1 receiver, which is never good.  More concerning, the d didn't seem to have the same energy and rally to the ball carrier; I think they are better than that.

Perhaps the silver lining in this gray day for Packer faithful is the next game is just a couple days ahead when Chicago drives north for a Thursday night game inside Lambeau.

I suspect getting the Bears in their sights will be just what the team doctor ordered.  Eleven games remain and there is time to get all cylinders firing between now and December.

Go Pack!
