Down to the Nitty Gritty

Nitty Gritty is a Madison landmark.

There are a couple other locations in Sun Prairie and Middleton; but for the full nitty gritty the location in the heart of campus is the place to go.

It's less than two blocks from the Kohl Center and LaBahn Ice Arena, which make it a perfect stop before and after games.

It's also Madison Birthday place ever since 1974.  Go on your birthday, get a mug and drink from it all birth - day long (soda, beer, or birthday cocktails).  You keep the mug.

There is classic pub food and it tastes great.  The atmosphere is casual and buzzing with conversation, cheers, and fun.

We were there for Sunday lunch on a recent snowy day.  The place was bustling with fans in for a bite before a hockey game and a mix of students and folks from the neighborhood.

The Gritty burger is their award winning 6 ounce chuck burger with secret gritty sauce on a honey wheat sesame seed bun.  Yowzers!  I'm glad it was just 6 ounces because I would have eaten a larger one!

The cheeses, if you like some melty on top of your burger, comes from Wisconsin dairies and creameries.  And, if you prefer, you can get a black bean burger.

There's sandwiches, chicken, assorted desserts, a full bar, malts and milk shakes on the menu.

Madison is a great place to eat.  There are dozens upon dozens of locally owned places to please every palate.

If you want to make a list of Madison's iconic eateries, the Nitty Gritty is on the list, and one you won't want to miss.
