These Bears are Welcome Here

The bears are back in town.

Polar and Grizzly bears disappeared from Madison's Henry Vilas Zoo a few years ago when the enclosures for them was deemed no longer up to care standards.

The bad report card led to discussion and action realized in the new Arctic Passage exhibit of the zoo.

The Polar bears lead a life with similarities to what they could experience in the great white north.

Grizzly bears get to roam land and obstacles reminiscent of the west and Harbor Seals experience a small version of the Pacific Ocean.

Like the rest of the Vilas Park Zoo, it's free.

There are some new features with this brilliant new section of the zoo.  Inside dining in the Glacier Grille and in an ironic twist, people may appear to be on the menu to the polar bears on the other side of the glass who can analyze a potential human buffet.

The zoo isn't large, but it's important.  It offers a place to observe wild wonders of the world.  Giraffes, a rhino, orangutans, reptiles, and a lion are some of the other creatures you'll find on a walk around the grounds.

The space surrounding the Arctic Passage (left) includes gigantic windows and spacious viewing areas.  There is a retired Arctic buggy used in previous exploration and even a bear trap offering a unique photo opportunity behind bars.

The third resident has a beautiful island feature and in-ground swimming pool.

The viewing area allows guests to imagine watching the athletic mammal cruising effortlessly through the deep.  Little do they know how close potential predators are to them, but the enjoy a care-free life with bear-free water.

The Arctic passage opened several months ago to huge crowds anxiously waiting for the return of Madison's bears.

Now feeling right at home in the middle of Packer country, these bears will be welcome to stick around.
