Breakfast @ Hubbard Avenue Diner

It's didn't work out to get there for Pi Day last week.  Yesterday was a great day to walk in the art deco, 1950s inspired diner in Middleton just west of Madison.

The diner was bustling with all kinds of folks:  Families in for a tasty breakfast;  father and son at the next table who seemed more engaged in their smart phones than anything else until the food showed up; and friends who slid on to the stools lining the attractive counter near the kitchen.

The atmosphere is airy and comfortable.  The menu tempting and inviting.

Madison is a brunch kind of town on Saturdays and Sundays.  The Hubbard is part of it, and provides breakfast every day of the week too.

Jelly on toast with a bowl of cereal for those who want a quick bite on their way to work or out of town.  Omelets, including one offering tribute to Euell Gibbons (kids, you have to Google him), french toast, eggs, and pancakes for those looking for a hearty weekend start.

I chose the single buttermilk pancake with blueberries to accompany a cool glass of chocolate milk.

Lavishness comes in the food on the plate, so there's no smoke and mirrors to deflect your attention from your meal.  Initially, I was a little surprised to count six blueberries as mini-ornaments on the cake.  Was that all of them,  I wondered?

Yielding more of a blueberry harvest came when I plunged my fork in for the first bite and found more inside.  Yum.

The single pancake was just what I needed for a day filled with a walk, some picture-taking, and NCAA basketball.

It tasted great.

It was also nice to have the option of ordering a single pancake in our "super-size-me" restaurant world.

There is pie on the menu, of course.  And wonderful diner style comfort food and vintage fountain drinks with malts and shakes served with the tin.

Hubbard Avenue Diner is part of the Food Fight Restaurant group in Madison that offers a variety of great places to eat.

For my money, it's one of the best.
