Where Did They Go?

There were supposed to be Bald Eagles in this picture.

My guess is there was a party someplace or maybe some convention of mice and small rodents that drew their attention.  Or maybe the biggest fish swam further down the Wisconsin River.

Just a little surprised, though, when we arrived at the viewing area below the hydroelectric dam just east of Prairie du Sac and there were no large birds in the air or in the tree.

In January, the community has a large Bald Eagle festival and there are eagles everywhere.  Maybe their appearance fee didn't spill over into February?

Likely, since it is the start of the mating season that eagles had a more pressing engagement to attend to with Valentine's Day quickly upon them.  And the open water down river meant they could choose from a fish buffet almost anywhere.

Yet, without the majesty of the National Bird, the river was starkly beautiful in early February.  There was steam rising off the water and a bite in the air.  Plenty cold enough to snap a few shots and retreat into the warmth of the waiting car.

It was a disappointment to miss the eagles.  A month ago, during an evening drive I saw a Bald Eagle flying overhead in the coming darkness identified by its size and the distinctive white head and tail.

Next winter I won't wait until February to make the trek to the Eagle's roost and hope to see a few in the skies of Wisconsin this summer.
