Back to Monty's Blue Plate Diner

Yesterday morning while looking for a friendly place for a quality breakfast, we returned to Monty's Blue Plate Diner on Atwood in Madison.

Monty's first surprise for us is that we could walk right in and plop into a comfortable booth to order and eat without a wait.  If we had arrived thirty minutes later though, there might have been a short wait.

Just a few moments after picking up the menu, the friendly server came over to greet us and learn what drinks we wanted to start our day.

It's relaxing to dine in the re-purposed gas station.  It is true to its past with pumps out front and photographs of the Atwood neighborhood on the wall.  Even the bathroom, while improved and modern, is reminiscent of those old gas station bathrooms.

Luckily, you don't need to get a key from the cashier that's been attached to a long block of wood or over-sized metal key!

You won't find the kind of food most old-school gas stations used to sell.  Each order is made fresh in the kitchen and the selection of fresh and inventive dishes is mouth-watering.

This was my third breakfast visit to Monty's - one of Madison's Food Fight restaurants - and it was even better than what I remembered.

A couple of buttermilk pancakes dappled with blueberries made for a sweet and filling start to the day.  It took a little while for the server to deliver the hot white, not blue, plates of delicious goodness, but time passes quick and the taste is worth it.

It's not fast because it's all made after you order - enjoy it.

There was a blueberry in every bite - folded into the batter to create a sweet and tangy breakfast flavor.

Monty's is a neighborhood place with a clientele traveling in from around greater Madison to enjoy the menu.  It's an unassuming place from the exterior - but worth trip after return trip.

One of these days, I'm looking forward to bellying up to the counter for one of their special fountain creations to get the full Monty experience.
