It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood....

July 27, 2012

While the line at the top of today's post evokes for most of us the opening line of Mr. Roger's favorite song - it goes a little deeper for me.

Back in college (in the last century), a group of us would meet each morning to head off to breakfast around 6:30am in advance of our 8 o'clock classes.  As you might expect, some were trying to pry their eyes open, others shuffled without speaking, and then there were the annoyingly chipper folks who seemed to smile too much; joke too frequently; and seem to be all too well rested.

Yep, I was in the latter group.  Kevin (another one of those up and at 'em kind of people) and I would invariably break out in song to Mr. Roger's song:

"It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood.... a beautiful day for a neighbor, would be mine?  could you be mine?"

With that ditty now firmly trapped inside your skull, think about all the 'neighbors' you've met today.  The folks at the local convenience store or coffee shop that provided the caffeine to get your day off and running.  The person you could wave at as they cross the street.  A passing biker.  The person who holds the door open as you walk in with both hands full.

All neighbors - some you don't even know yet - get to know 'em.

The more you know, even if its just a name and a face - makes this whole place a beautiful neighborhood!
